َقَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ 1362 اَلْمُمْتَحِنَة
َ قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَا أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿۴﴾ رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ ﴿۵﴾
﴾4﴿ Qad kaanat lakum uswatun hasanatun feee Ibraaheema wallazeena ma'ahoo iz qaaloo liqawmihim innaa bura 'aaa'u minkum wa mimmaa ta'budoona min doonil laahi kafarnaa bikum wa badaa bainanaa wa bainakumul 'adaawatu wal baghdaaa'u abadan hattaa tu'minoo billaahi wahdahooo illaa qawla Ibraheema li abeehi la astaghfiranna laka wa maaa amliku laka minal laahi min shai; rabbanaa 'alaika tawakkalnaa wa ilaika anabnaa wa ilaikal maseer
﴾5﴿ Rabbana laa taj'alnaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo waghfir lanaa rabbanaa innaka antal azeezul hakeem
﴾4﴿ Indeed, you have an excellent example to follow in Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and those with him when they said to their people:
Surely, we disassociate from you and from whatever you worship besides Allah. We reject you, and enmity and hatred have become evident between us and you forever—until you believe in Allah alone.
(Except for the statement of Ibrahim (AS) to his father: I will surely seek forgiveness for you, but I have no power to save you from the punishment of Allah.)
(Then they prayed:)
Our Lord! In You alone do we place our trust, to You alone do we turn in devotion, and to You alone is our final return
﴾5﴿ O our Lord! Do not make us a trial for the disbelievers, and forgive us, O our Lord! Indeed, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise
[4] In this response, there is a question: if it is said that disavowing one’s relatives is irreligious, the answer is given that this (disavowal) is the religion of Abraham (peace be upon him), who, along with his companions, disavowed the polytheists, even if they were their fathers, children, or others. Following them is necessary.
(وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ) — meaning: we assign no right of divinity to them; we do not worship them with our bodies or wealth.
(كَفَرْنَا) — is in its linguistic sense, meaning "we deny" — that is, we deny your gods, the truth of your religion, and maintaining any attachments with you.
(حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ) — indicates that the cause of disavowal and enmity is denial of monotheism. Thus, it is understood that disavowing a monotheist is forbidden. Yes, avoiding someone due to a sin is permissible, but there is a difference between disavowal and avoidance.
Disavowal is exclusively for polytheists, as in Sūrah Tawbah (9:1,3), Sūrah Anʿām (6:78,19), and Sūrah Hūd (11:54,35).
(إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ) — meaning: following Abraham (peace be upon him) in all his words and actions is necessary, except for this one statement — i.e., do not follow him in promising to seek forgiveness for the polytheist, nor should you seek forgiveness for him. The details of his seeking forgiveness are in Sūrah Tawbah (9:114), and this statement of Abraham (peace be upon him) is mentioned in Sūrah Maryam (19:47).
(رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا) — meaning: disavowing the polytheistic people and enmity toward them is a difficult act, but through trust in Allah the Exalted, every hardship becomes easy.
[5] This too is the supplication of Abraham (peace be upon him), or it is a command for the believers of this ummah.
(فِتْنَةً) refers to punishment — meaning: do not punish us at the hands of the disbelievers. Or, fitnah means trial, referring to remaining firm in shirk (polytheism), and the cause is mentioned instead of the actual result.
The intended meaning is: O our Lord, do not bring upon us punishment either from Yourself or through the disbelievers, which would result in the disbelievers becoming more entrenched in their shirk. That is, they will assume they are on the truth, and that is why punishment or domination has come upon the believers.
