[5] This mentions another aspect of awe — the effect of Qāri‘ah (the striking calamity) on the mountains.
It indicates that the impact of Qāri‘ah is the same on both the mighty and firm creation (mountains) and the weak creation (humans).
“الْمَنْفُوشِ” — like wool that is carded, with its fibers separated and scattered; this is how the state of the mountains will become.
[6,7] This refers to the division of people after resurrection, beginning with the state of the believers in the form of glad tidings.
“مَوَازِينُهُ” — The preferred view is that for some, their actual deeds will be weighed; for others, their deeds will be given a form and weighed; and for others, their scrolls of deeds will be weighed. The weighing will occur for both believers and disbelievers.
There is also a difference of opinion: is the scale (mīzān) singular, and it is referred to in the plural due to its connection to many deeds, or are there multiple scales? (Allah knows best.)
“ثَقُلَتْ” — The heaviness of the scale is not due to the quantity of deeds, but due to sincerity, belief in Tawheed, and following the Sunnah — even if the actions are few.
Similarly, the lightness of the scale is not due to the scarcity of deeds, but due to shirk, innovations, and opposition to the Book and Sunnah.
Al-Khazin, in his Tafsir, alluded to this by mentioning that following the truth gives weight, while following falsehood leads to lightness.
[8,9] This describes the state of the deniers and serves as a warning.
“فَأُمُّهُ” — Umm originally means a place of return or gathering, meaning Hāwiyah is his ultimate return, just as a child’s return is to its mother.
“هَاوِيَةٌ” — This is the name of a level of Hell, derived from hawā, meaning to fall — indicating a deep and dreadful descent.
[10,11] This mentions the terrifying greatness of Hāwiyah.
“نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ” — a blazing fire. In an authentic hadith, it is mentioned that this fire is seventy times hotter than the fire of this world.
