تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي 1461 اَلْقِیامَةِ

َ بَلَى قَادِرِينَ عَلَى أَنْ نُسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ ﴿۴﴾ بَلْ يُرِيدُ الْإِنْسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ ﴿۵﴾ يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ ﴿۶﴾ فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ ﴿۷﴾ وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ ﴿۸﴾ وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ﴿۹﴾ يَقُولُ الْإِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ ﴿۱۰﴾

﴾4﴿ Balaa qaadireena 'alaaa an nusawwiya banaanah
﴾5﴿ Bal yureedul insaanu liyafjura amaamah
﴾6﴿ Yas'alu ayyyaana yawmul qiyaamah
﴾7﴿ Fa izaa bariqal basar
﴾8﴿ Wa khasafal qamar
﴾9﴿ Wa jumi'ash shamsu wal qamar
﴾10﴿ Yaqoolul insaanu yaw ma 'izin aynal mafarr

﴾4﴿ Rather, We have the power to restore even his fingertips
﴾5﴿ Rather, man desires to deny what lies ahead of him
﴾6﴿ He asks, When will the Day of Resurrection be
﴾7﴿ Then, when the eyes are dazzled
﴾8﴿ And the moon darkens
﴾9﴿ And the sun and the moon are joined together
﴾10﴿ On that day, man will say, Where is the place of escape

[5,6] This too is a torment. The pronoun (أَمَامَهُ) refers to the human being, and what is meant by "what lies ahead" is the torment of the grave, followed by resurrection, reckoning, and the scale of deeds. Or the pronoun refers to the Day of Resurrection, and the object of the verb "tafajjara" (he bursts forth) is hidden, meaning "so that he may burst forth against the truth" (i.e., he denies the truth before the coming of the Resurrection).
[7,8,9] This warning is by mentioning the terrors of the Day of Resurrection, and this is a response to "Ayyān" (When is it?) in the manner of a threat.
(بَرِقَ) means bewilderment and terror, or it means the eyes becoming fixed and staring, as in Surah Ibrahim (14:43). This state occurs both at the time of death and at the time of resurrection.
(وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ) – This eclipse (of the moon) is permanent, whereas the lunar eclipse in the world is temporary.
(وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ) – The meaning of “gathered” is that both will become equally without light, or it means that they will both appear together shining from the west. This opinion is narrated from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with them both). Or it may mean that on the Day of Resurrection, both the sun and the moon will be gathered and cast into the Fire of Hell as a form of reproach for those who worshiped them; they are not cast in for punishment, but for rebuke.
[10,11,12] This too is a mention of the calamities of the Day of Resurrection. (الْإِنْسَانُ) refers to every human being, whether a believer or a disbeliever—he speaks in this way out of terror. Or it may be that it refers specifically to the disbeliever.
