َقَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ 1379 المنافقون
َ وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُمْ مُسْتَكْبِرُونَ ﴿۵﴾ سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ ﴿۶﴾ هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا وَلِلَّهِ خَزَائِنُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ ﴿۷﴾ يَقُولُونَ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ وَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿۸﴾
﴾5﴿ Wa izaa qeela lahum ta'aalaw yastaghfir lakum rasoolul laahi lawwaw ru'oo sahum wa ra aytahum yasuddoona wa hum mustakbiroon
﴾6﴿ Sawaaa'un 'alaihim as taghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lany yaghfiral laahu lahum; innal laaha laa yahdil qawmal faasiqeen
﴾7﴿ Humul lazeena yaqooloona laa tunfiqoo 'alaa man inda Rasoolil laahi hatta yanfaddoo; wa lillaahi khazaaa' inus samaawaati wal ardi wa laakinnal munaafiqeena la yafqahoon
﴾8﴿ Yaqooloona la'ir raja'naaa ilal madeenati la yukhrijannal a'azzu minhal azall; wa lillaahil 'izzatu wa li Rasoolihee wa lilmu'mineena wa laakinnal munaafiqeena laa ya'lamoon
﴾5﴿ And when it is said to them, "Come, so the Messenger of Allah may seek forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside, and you see them turning away in arrogance
﴾6﴿ It is the same for them whether you seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them; Allah will never forgive them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people
﴾7﴿ They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah so that they may disperse." Yet to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand
﴾8﴿ They say, If we return to Medina, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble. Yet honor belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know
[5] In this verse, three characteristics of the hypocrites are mentioned, indicating their persistence in sin:
1. "(They do not come to you)"—They refrain from approaching the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), especially when seeking forgiveness.
2. "(Except while they are lazy)"—Even when they do come, it is without sincerity or eagerness; they are unmotivated and sluggish.
3. "(And they are arrogant)"—Arrogance here includes the meaning of belittling and looking down upon the act of coming to the Prophet and asking for his supplication.
They consider it beneath them, which is a clear act of disbelief (kufr).
[6] In this verse, one characteristic of the hypocrites is mentioned—that when it becomes clear that they openly disbelieve and do not even seek forgiveness, then even the supplication of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) will not benefit such people.
[7] In this verse, two traits of the hypocrites are mentioned, and their statement is refuted in between:
"(Who are with the Messenger of Allah)"—This is the saying of the hypocrites.
They would outwardly call him the Messenger, but their intention was to mock or diminish his status.
Alternatively, this phrase is from Allah Himself to express extreme condemnation of them—driving people away from the presence of the Messenger of Allah is a very evil and disgraceful act.
"(So they would disperse)"—Meaning they assumed that people would leave due to hunger, scattering away.
This is the mindset of ignorant, materialistic people who attach everything to outward causes and are heedless of Allah’s lordship and divinity.
"(And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth)"—This is a refutation of their false belief and claim.
The meaning is that sustenance and all its means—rain, trees, plants, and everything else—are fully in Allah’s control.
These are His infinite treasures, which never diminish.
[8] In this verse, two characteristics of the hypocrites are mentioned.
In the previous verse, it was shown that they are stingy with their wealth.
Here, it is mentioned that they consider wealth a source of honor.
"(If we return)"—This incident occurred during the return from the expedition of Banu Mustaliq, which is also known as the Battle of Muraysi‘.
"(Surely the more honorable will expel the more humble)"—By al-‘Azzu (the more honorable), they meant ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy, the chief hypocrite, who was wealthy and believed his wealth gave him superiority.
By al-Adhallu (the more humble), they were referring to the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), which is clear disbelief (kufr).
"(But honor belongs to Allah)"—This corrects their corrupt belief, affirming that true honor belongs to Allah alone, and it is attained through faith and piety, the traits of the Messenger and the believers.
Question: In Surah An-Nisa (4:139) and Fatir (35:10), honor is mentioned as belonging exclusively to Allah. But in this verse, it is attributed also to the Messenger and the believers?
Answer: In those two verses, the meaning is that the authority to bestow honor belongs solely to Allah.
But in this verse, the meaning is that Allah, His Messenger, and the believers possess honor as a quality given by Allah.
As for the hypocrites and disbelievers, they have no share in true honor.
"(But the hypocrites do not know)"—This adds to their disgrace. Since deep understanding (fiqh) comes from knowledge, and they lack knowledge, their ignorance further emphasizes their vileness.
