َقَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ 118 الواقعة

َ وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ﴿۵﴾ فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا ﴿۶﴾ وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً ﴿۷﴾ فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿۸﴾ وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ ﴿۹﴾ وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ ﴿۱۰﴾ أُولَئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿۱۱﴾ فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ ﴿۱۲﴾ ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿۱۳﴾ وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ ﴿۱۴﴾

﴾5﴿ Wa bussatil jibaalu bassaa
﴾6﴿ Fakaanat habaaa'am mumbassaa
﴾7﴿ Wa kuntum azwaajan salaasah
﴾8﴿ Fa as haabul maimanati maaa as haabul maimanah
﴾9﴿ Wa as haabul mash'amati maaa as haabul mash'amah
﴾10﴿ Wassaabiqoonas saabiqoon
﴾11﴿ Ulaaa'ikal muqarraboon
﴾12﴿ Fee Jannaatin Na'eem
﴾13﴿ Fee Jannaatin Na'eem
﴾14﴿ Wa qaleelum minal aa khireen

﴾5﴿ And the mountains will be crushed into fine dust, scattered completely
﴾6﴿ Then it will become dispersed dust
﴾7﴿ And you will become three groups
﴾8﴿ Then, the people of the right—how great is their status among the people of the right
﴾9﴿ And the people of the left—how wretched is the state of the people of the left
﴾10﴿ And the foremost (in faith) in this world will be the foremost to enter Paradise in the Hereafter
﴾11﴿ These are the ones who have been brought near (to Allah)
﴾12﴿ They will be in Gardens of Blissm
﴾13﴿ A group from the former nations
﴾14﴿ And a few from the later generations

[5,6] This describes the state of the mountains so that one does not mistakenly think that, since the mountains are like pegs fixed on the earth, how could all of this move. It is stated that the mountains too will vanish: (هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا) – like the dust that rises from the hooves of horses when they gallop swiftly, which then disperses and disappears.
[7] This division of people is based on their beliefs and actions. Likewise, they will again be divided based on their recompense. However, in the world they were mixed together, and each would present their own path as the right one. Therefore, the division was not fully evident in the world, but in the Hereafter, it will become fully manifest.
[8,9] This refers to the threefold division. Now the first group is mentioned: (الْمَيْمَنَةِ), which is derived from yameen (right), meaning they will be directed to the right side of the gathering field, because the right side is that of Paradise. Or it may be derived from yumn (blessing), meaning they are people of goodness, blessing, and are fortunate.
[10,11] This refers to the second group: (الْمَشْأَمَةِ), which is related to shimaal (left), meaning their books of deeds will be given in their left hands, or that they will be directed to the left side of the gathering field, because that side leads to Hell. Or it may be derived from shu’m (misfortune), meaning they are the wretched and unfortunate ones.
[12] This is the third group. The first refers to those who were foremost in doing good deeds in the world, and the second refers to those who will be the first to enter Paradise on the Day of Judgment. (الْمُقَرَّبُونَ) – their ranks are very close to the Throne and to Allah, the Most High.
[13,14] There are two opinions regarding the “first” and the “last”:
The first opinion is that by “the first,” the foremost companions of previous prophets are meant. Since there were many prophets (peace be upon them), the total number of their companions is large. And by “the last,” the noble companions of our Ummah are meant. Although they are numerous in themselves, they are fewer compared to the total companions of past prophets.
The second opinion is that “the first” refers to the foremost of our Ummah (the companions), and “the last” refers to those in this Ummah who hastened to faith and followed the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), walking in the footsteps of the noble companions. These people are fewer than the companions.
Ibn Kathir preferred the second opinion and mentioned many hadiths regarding the virtue of this Ummah.
